I’ve had both a challenging and exhilarating relationship with public speaking - from growing up absolutely dreading it and avoiding it at all costs, to discovering that when I am finally up there and doing it, I have a lot to share, and am been able to make a meaningful impact.

Today’s guest Johanna Walker shares her story of growing up on the more shy and quiet side only to discover the profound presence and power of her voice on stage. She went on to craft a powerful talk about her journey of navigating grief after growing older and one day realizing she would never become a mother. It was through hearing another woman’s story that she could relate to that pulled her out of the grief and into a mission of telling her own story and supporting others to do the same. She now encourages all of us to tell the stories we never thought we would want to tell because of how much they may help someone else.

There are many powerful take-aways in today’s episode ~ I hope you enjoy it.

In this episode we discussed:

  • Johanna’s story of moving through grief after never having children, and how she crafted a moving talk that touched the hearts of many

  • The power of storytelling in sharing your message

  • How to tap into charisma and presence

  • Johanna’s story of growing up as the quiet girl to embodying a powerful stage presence through sharing poetry and talks, to her life now as a teacher for public speaking

  • Johanna’s process of finding your “genie gem” ~ the essence of what will make your talk most meaningful and memorable

  • How becoming a powerful speaker influenced Johanna’s relationship to fear

Many of us can easily get lost in self-doubt and “what-if’s” when we take a step into unfamiliar territory. Kelly Smith was no different when she was faced with a decision to move from a progressive city to a small town in Missouri with her husband while he finished medical school. She knew she was faced a choice - either she could be a victim to her circumstances and let her inner critic voices get the best of her, or she could make something truly amazing from the experience she had been given.

Kelly went on to start the first yoga studio in the small town where many thought yoga was against their religion. She was able to rise up in spite of adversity and create a thriving space for people to align their mind, bodies and hearts. And most importantly, along the way, she learned to believe in herself as a teacher.

In this episode Kelly shares how to move beyond fear and doubt to truly believe in yourself, your gifts and what it is you are here to share.

In this episode we discussed:

  • Kelly’s story of starting her own yoga studio at 22 years old and her journey of learning to believe in herself as a leader and teacher

  • How to get out of your own way and stop holding yourself back

  • How to quiet your “inner mean girl” with meditation

  • Finding your authentic voice as a teacher

  • What to do if you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, and how to use meditation to help

She works with empowering women and helping people become the best versions of themselves through yoga. She believes the mind is the most powerful thing you possess and there is nothing in this world holding you back except for you! After a life time of telling herself lies and believing that she wasn't good enough, smart enough, talented enough, special enough, thin enough, or just plain enough, she took a long hard look in the mirror and in her heart and decided it was time she connected with who she truly was, got out of her own way and started to finally live. Through yoga and meditation she got a glimpse of who she truly was, and it changed everything.

She has dedicated her life to teaching soul-searchers how to master their minds and connect with their true selves so they can live an abundant and authentic life.

What Makes People Truly Happy?

M19.jpg

With only a few weeks left in the year I feel inspired to lead a new online masterclass for you.

The idea for this masterclass originated at a point in my life when I was in an abyss of despair and felt total emptiness.

It was about ten days after I had accomplished one of my wildest dreams, and the realization had settled on me: when we reach a goal, fulfill a desire or finally attain something outside of ourselves that we’ve been reaching for, often a feeling of emptiness follows.

The desire had been reached and I was left with this empty hole.

That emptiness was unbearable.

And i realized it was that unbearable feeling - the inability to hold myself in exactly what was -was what first led me to be a seeker.

Because as much as our ego would like us to think attaining what is outside of ourselves will bring us true happiness, ultimately it falls flat.

So as I remembered my first days becoming a seeker, I decided to meditate. The next day I meditated again, and the next day again. And soon that emptiness turned into something else.

I realized this abyss and emptiness was how I had experienced being in the unknown, and that had been one of the hardest places for me to be.

But one morning I found a great peace, and realized there are two ways I could view the unknown:

I could see it as the cause of great anxiety, or even depression.

OR I could see it as a space of ultimate potential.

The place where all creation manifests. The dark womb of the mother.

And it was as I opened to that space of ultimate potential, I found my true joy...

In the unmanifest...
In the mystery...
In the patience of not knowing...
In the cosmic space of infinite potential.

I realized true happiness was not in the materialization of my desires, but actually in the anticipation of realizing something I truly longed for. It was in the willingness to be with the mystery.

I finally saw there was a beauty in that anticipation. A seductiveness of the unknown.

And from that place, words began filling the page of my journal, and afterwards I looked down to see I had wrote:

6 Secrets to True Fulfillment

I’ll let you in on one of them: it’s making peace with this mystery.

This invites us to deeply embody the essence of the feminine. The receptive quality of being okay with everything as it is, while opening ourselves to the pure beauty and potential of what is to come.

But how do you do it? … Keep reading…

If you find yourself reading this today I imagine you are a person of depth and devotion.

Renee is one of those people I feel like I was destined to meet. We found each other through our publisher, She Writes Press after Renee signed to publish her book with them. We had an immediate connection and soon after I had the honor of being a coach and guide for Renee the year leading up to her book launch.

In The Burn Zone, Renee openly and honestly shares her story — of losing her father at a young age, growing up with an abusive and alcoholic mother, to creating a successful career as a model and dancer, only to join a spiritual group “cult” that led her to burn everything that reminded her of her past (clothes, photos, everything), learn computer programming, get an MBA and create a life that felt the opposite of authentic to her.

After years of having a toxic relationship with her spiritual teacher, a near-death experience in a snowboarding accident finally gave her the "Wake Up” she needed to leave and start her life anew.

After picking up the pieces and going through her own personal healing from anger to forgiveness, she decided to share her story in her new memoir, The Burn Zone.

This thrilling tale leaves us with a powerful message of how to own our differences and liberate ourselves from the shame we carry from our past.

In this episode we discussed:

  • What Renee learned on her first month-long book tour

  • All about Renee’s new book, The Burn Zone

  • Renee’s story of being brainwashed and joining a cult and how she found herself again on the other side

  • The pattern of repeated trauma with empaths and narcissists

  • The vulnerable journey of having people read her writing

  • The liberation that comes with “Letting our skeletons out of the closet”

  • How to release shame and hiding about our past

  • What’s on the horizon for Renee next

"Loving ourselves means stop making excuses for not giving ourselves the things we want in this life. Our life is so short."

About The Burn Zone:

After seven years of faithfully following her spiritual teacher, Renee Linnell finally realized she was in a cult and had been severely brainwashed. But how did that happen to someone like her? She had graduated magna cum laude with a double degree. She had traveled to nearly fifty countries alone before she turned thirty-five. She was a surf model and a professional Argentine tango dancer. She had started five different companies and had an MBA from NYU. How could someone like her end up brainwashed and in a cult?

The Burn Zone is an exploration of how we give up our power―how what started out as a need to heal from the loss of her parents and to understand the big questions in life could leave a young woman fighting for her sanity and her sense of self. In the years following her departure from the cult, Linnell struggled to reclaim herself, to stand in her truth, and to rebuild her life. And eventually, after battling depression and isolation, she found a way to come out the other side stronger than ever. Part inspirational story, part cautionary tale, this is a memoir for spiritual seekers and those who feel lost in a world that makes them feel less than perfect.

Renee Linnell graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double degree, traveled to nearly fifty countries before she turned 35, was a surf/bikini model and a professional Argentine Tango dancer, started 5 different companies, and got an MBA from New York University. She also spent close to seven years in a Buddhist cult and ended up severely brainwashed. In her new memoir, The Burn Zone, Renee discusses her journey into "deranged and damaged" and her awakening on the other side. Her key message is:  “Our difference is our destiny, and that when we stop trying to hide the parts of us that make us different, we will truly soar.!”

Announcement: The Sovereign Circle begins this February 2019 ~ Learn More Here

After experiencing California’s wildfires, witnessing the increasing amount of hurricanes on the news and hearing firsthand accounts from friends and family of climate change throughout the world, I knew I wanted to interview an expert on this topic for the Rising Women Leaders podcast.

I just so happened to know the perfect person to interview - my sister, Nicole Rom. Nicole has been the Executive Director of Climate Generation for 12 years, empowering individuals and their communities to engage in solutions to climate change. Nicole breaks down what we need to know about our current state of the world and where we are headed when it comes to rising temperatures, sea levels and how we will be affected in the coming years. We discussed everything from how our family impacted our love for the environment, daily actions we can take to lower our carbon footprint, how to navigate the inherent grief of this issue as well as stories to cultivate hope.

I hope you enjoy the show.

In this episode we discussed:

  • Our family ancestry of individuals who deeply cared about the environment and how that impacted our values growing up

  • A definition of climate change and what we are facing today

  • Navigating grief and hope in changing times

  • Climate Generation’s mission and impact

  • Daily life changes and actions we can take on a personal, local and global level to make a difference

  • Resources Nicole recommends for educating ourselves (films, books and websites to check out)

  • Upcoming trainings and projects at Climate Generation

“One of the most important things we can do is normalize the conversation on climate change. I know many of us are scared. You feel like you need to know the science… Don’t worry about it…All you have to say is ‘I’m worried about this. This is what I’m seeing. This is who is going to be impacted.’ It is from that place you can connect with someone heart to heart.”

My Journey with the Dark Goddess

Blessings to you on this Scorpio New Moon!

This is a time to honor the depths of our emotions, to go far into the dark places, crawling low to the ground like the Scorpion, seeing our challenges with a higher perspective like the Eagle, and allowing new life to emerge from the ashes like the Phoenix.

With the recent holiday of Samhain and the days getting shorter, it's also a time to acknowledge and honor the dark side of the feminine, the Dark Goddess.

The Dark Goddess is embodied in many forms - Kali Ma, the Wild Woman, the Crone, Hecate, Pele... to name a few.

Up until one year ago I was pretty afraid and cautious when it came to the Dark Goddess.

My friend would sometimes sing songs to Kali and I would always think, "Be careful what you ask for!!"and I would choose not to sing with her.

Sure enough over the next month after she was singing those songs I watched as her life began to dismantle - first it was the job, then the boyfriend, then the home. All falling apart within a matter of days.

And yet, as I saw it happening from the outside, I knew it was for the highest good.

I knew those things were no longer serving her, and it was in her willingness to let the Dark Goddess into her life that they were able to burn away.

Within days of her life dismantling, new opportunities emerged from the darkness: she was offered a dream job position where she could work remotely and was able to spend the winter traveling to beautiful, tropical faraway places.

As I watched this happen, and saw how her life came into deeper and deeper alignment with her truth, I began to see at her core, the Dark Goddess was truly just another aspect of Love.

Yes she is fierce. Yes she may catalyze pain. Yes she may cut away the things that make us feel safe and comfortable.

But it is only for the highest good. It is only to help us ascend and evolve into deeper levels of alignment with our truth.

It was then I chose to stop holding the Dark Goddess at arms length. For the first time in my life, I let her in.

When the fires in Sonoma County happened, I participated in a ritual where I crossed a threshold and consciously chose to let whatever was out of alignment in my life to burn away.

Knowing I could risk giving up my relationship, my home, my work - all the things that made me feel safe. I was willing to offer it all up to come into deeper alignment with my truth.

In the next month I decided to go off all social media, and I even shut down my website while I allowed myself time to be born anew.

I went to India for a month by myself during this time, attended a week-long Kali Ma yoga retreat, and woke up before 5 am everyday to sing in the Kali temple.

What ensued was not pretty - I got sick, had a terrible sore throat, was having old memories come up where I didn't honor my boundaries, and on top of that I was assigned seva to work at the ashram's garbage and recycling center.

I was literally and figuratively knee deep in trash.

I had just finished a training to become an EFT practitioner - and found myself tapping in the corner of the temple most mornings while I cleared old memories and past hurts that were rising to the surface.

And something else happened while I was there - I started feeling my rage.

Rage for the times I didn't honor my boundaries, rage for seeing all the trash we were creating in the west and how we were hurting our Mother Earth, rage for the sickness and sore throats I was continually having.

I began expressing that rage in healthy ways. I remember having one night where I sat fuming in front of the Kali Ma statue in her temple breathing heavily, allowing the intense sensations to overtake me.

I went up to my room, made sounds, yelled, let the wild woman fully inhabit my body. I felt the intense power of the Dark Goddess move through me.

And as the new year dawned, my health improved, and I began feeling more settled. I attended a women's circle on my last day at the ashram, and what I experienced there was pure bliss.

The sweetest, softest, most inviting and loving space.

I left that circle euphoric, and realized, because I was holding Kali Ma at arm's distance, I was not able to fully experience to softer side of the Divine Feminine. The sweetness. The love. As soon as I let in her fierceness, I also let in the most nurturing qualities of the feminine into my life.

I learned that life really is this constant dance of duality, and when we fully invite in our pain, our discomfort, our willingness to go into the shadows, we also invite the sweetest, most pure forms of love.

The Dark Goddess is here to help us. To love us. And if we are willing to let her in, there are so many gifts she will grant us:

The Dark Goddess helped me set strong boundaries, stand up for what I believe in, say yes to my power, release my shame, shine my light brighter, and helped me let go of caring what other people were thinking of me.

These are just a few of the gifts the Dark Goddess can give to us when we let her into our life.

If you are in the depths of your own transformation (and transformation is usually not easy or pretty), know that this is all part of it, a powerful cycle, leading you to a new emergence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When you allow it all to fall apart, to let the pain or the grief overtake you, to go into the depths of your shadow, to give light to your shame, you allow space for something new to emerge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This week ~ give yourself permission to rest, to feel, to welcome the Dark Goddess into your being, to set new boundaries, to allow discomfort to be OK, to look into the shadows and from that place to see what new life wants to emerge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Tonight I'll be gathering with the sisters in my program The Sovereign Circle to work with the energy of this Scorpio New moon and the Dark Goddess.

I'm excited to be finalizing new dates for the next round of The Sovereign Circle on the calendar -- we'll be beginning in February 2019. This is a 9-month feminine leadership initiation & high priestess sisterhood that is a true joy of mine to guide.

This happened to be right after Luna finished a death midwifery training, and I was astounded to hear all the information she had been learning about death and the funeral industry.

  • How we can bring more awareness about our own death and use it as empowerment on how we want to live

059 | In Honor of Mary Magdalene with Meredith Rom

SUBSCRIBE ON ITUNES

Some of you may know that two years ago Mary Magdalene was honored by the Pope and Catholic church as The Apostle of the Apostles.

After centuries of being seen as a prostitute and sinner, Mary Magdalene's legacy was honored and recognized by the Church as the incredible teacher, healer and priestess that she was.

She was given a feast day in her honor, which happens to be this weekend: Sunday, July 22nd.

This means so much for our awakening collective consciousness, that this powerful woman would no longer be shunned or shamed by the church, and on a larger scale I really believe speaks to how women are being recognized in reclaiming their power.

Six months ago while I was in India I read a profound book by Mercedes Kirkel about Mary Magdalene and her core teachings.

It was like every page spoke directly to my heart as truth.

For a week I was staying in a cottage in a small mountain town by myself, reading the pages, and when I finished, I felt inspired to create recordings of what I had learned.

As of now I've only ever shared these recordings and teachings with my private clients, however in honor of Mary Magdalene's Feast Day, July 22, I'd like to share them with you.

I've gathered together the Rose lineage teachings that have most impacted my life:

  1. Feeling Your Pain & Emotions - How to navigate difficult emotions as they arise and use them as a pathway to your own source and divinity
  2. A Guided Process on Forgiveness - Feeling your own pain is a key teaching to be able to authentically forgive
  3. Tapping into Abundance Consciousness - Embodying a state of enough & looking at the world from a lens of abundance
  4. Honoring your Body & Sexuality as Sacred Portals to the Divine - Including a few of my favorite practices

This recording is available *For Free* this week only at risingwomenleaders.com

How will you honor Mary on her Feast Day?

Here are some ideas:

  • Gather with women in an intentional space ~ hold a circle where each woman shares her voice and truth of her emotions
  • Listen to the Recording on the Process of Forgiveness and Journal about who you are forgiving in your life
  • Create a ritual to honor your body ~ a luxurious bath, and self body oil massage

Or create something unique of your own!

Love,
Meredith

It is a great honor to introduce you today to a personal guide and mentor of mine, Marin Bach-Antonson.

For the last year I have been participating in a 13 gateway Priestess Initiation Program led by Marin. It has been a truly transformational experience to embody principles of the sacred feminine in every area of my life.

In this conversation, Marin shares about the role of the Priestess, the rise of the feminine in our collective consciousness and one of the most simple and profoundly life-changing practices we can bring into our life right here and right now.

"When you allow those feelings to be exactly as they are, then you have access to the feelings. You are not pushing the feelings down...you aren't trying to make them different,  yoga them away, journal them out, or juice fast them into dissolving. You're just being with them because you are allowing them. The only way out is through. It's the feeling of our feelings that ultimately gets us to the other side of them."

In this episode we discussed:

  • How Marin found herself on the Priestess path
  • The 4 stages of feminine awakening
  • Allowing: why it's the highest expression of the divine feminine
  • A key secret to manifestation
  • Marin's personal practice for manifesting abundance
  • The archetype of the Priestess and how it is showing up in the collective
  • Marin's experience with Mary Magdalene
  • How to connect to your Dharma

057 | Unleashing the Brilliance of Women's Voices with KC Baker

A couple years ago I had the honor of participating in one of KC Baker’s courses, Speak Up for Your Business. At the time I had been an active member in my local Toastmasters group to overcome my fears of public speaking and was interested in learning KC's methods for speechwriting.

I was preparing to launch a Kickstarter fundraiser to publish my book, Just Be and although I had been practicing public speaking, I was still pretty terrified at the thought of taking the stage.

KC's training not only gave me a step by step process for writing the architecture, or, "bones" of my speech, but was also full with wisdom and unconventional practices that made me feel so much more confident at being seen and heard.

KC's work has been hugely transformational in my life and I am so honored to be sharing her wisdom with you today.

In this conversation you'll learn how to transform fear and self-doubt around sharing your voice into total freedom, fun and confidence. KC also shares the powerful story of her son's birth as well as a few tips on how you can gain clarity on your message and what you stand for.

I hope you enjoy!

"Most people think that the intensity you feel in your body before public speaking is fear, and it's something terrible that 'I have to make go away in order to feel free to speak up'. When the reality is - it's the feeling of your power, and the secret is saying YES to it, lean into it.  You will find so much freedom in that intensity."

In this episode we discussed:

  • KC's personal story related to public speaking, spoken word and performance
  • How we can reframe the intense body sensations we feel before we are about to speak in public
  • Bringing the feminine and unconventional practices to prepare for a speech
  • How to move beyond the fear and self-doubt that holds so many of us back from speaking up
  • Saying "Yes!" to our power and my story of giving a speech at my grandmother's memorial
  • How we can get clear on our message
  • KC's story of the birth of her son
  • The best way to start your career as a speaker and start landing speaking engagements
